What We Seek:

An ideal Summer Resident is someone who:

This looks like:

Are you ready to have potentially challenging, nuanced conversations about all different aspects of identity (like gender, race, economic status)? Do you want to learn more about how your identities shape the way you perceive and are perceived by others? Are you interested in creating partnerships for justice and social transformation with people who don’t share all your identities?

Are you committed to working with diverse community members?

We seek young people who have the courage to talk about what privilege and marginalization look like in their lives. We seek participants willing to have potentially challenging and nuanced conversations around different types of identities and who commit to building relationships.

We seek young people who are ready to explore community partnerships in neighborhoods that may not look like where they grew up.

We invite participants excited about doing fun social activities that are organized around personal and collective exploration.

Are you interested in learning more about drawing strength and peace from a spiritual center? Are you open to exploring the Quaker practice of sitting in silence together to listen for how spirit is moving through this group at this time?

Do you bring a willingness to explore spirituality through embodied Quaker practices?

We seek young people who are excited about spiritual exploration. We seek young people who are willing to try different practices beyond the awkward first impression of trying something new. We seek young adults who want to sit in expectant silence and listen for the “still, small voice” of Spirit.

We seek participants interested in engaging in intergenerational relationships with Quakers (who are often over the age of 50) twice a week.

Are you interested in gaining practical skills and experience for working in a hands-on immersive setting in social justice movement work?  We seek young people who are excited by the idea of supporting local nonprofits, often through direct service. This will likely look like engaging in physical activity (to the best of your ability) for 1 1⁄2 to 2 hours or contributing to a collective project. We invite participants to participate in tasks which support the local community towards a goal. We will explore different themes of social justice and what contributes to its causes.
Are you interested in exploring a variety of social justice topics with others that might share the same questions? Are you invested in asking challenging questions about living simply, with integrity and justice? We seek participants who are interested in engaging in discussion and are willing to try on workshop activities that might be just outside of their comfort zone during workshop time. We hope you are interested in living with others in a non-mainstream way that embraces simplicity, sustainability, right relationship and community.

Applications due March 1, 2025. Interviews will start the week of March 31, 2025. The first date of the pre-sessions will be the week of April 13th, 2025.

About Rai Carter (they/them)

Rai (they/them) grew up in Philadelphia. They came into interfaith work in their years in undergrad.  Since then, Rai has spent time researching ecotheology in the Black community and learning to understand its connections to other faith and spiritual practices.  They have also spent time working in Racial Equity and systems change work over the past several years.

Rai is passionate about plants and the natural world, cooking as a healing practice and understanding various community and social systems. They are interested in further exploring the intersection of religion, food, and employment and are hoping to continue this exploration with further study. They also enjoy biking, taking care of their many plants and their cat and listening to podcasts in their time off.

In 2018-2019, Rai moved to Atlanta to participate in QVS. QVS was their first introduction to Quaker practice. Rai joined staff as the QVS Atlanta Coordinator and is now the Philadelphia Coordinator.

Connect with them via Rai@quakervoluntaryservice.org.
